Moving on or off Boca Grande is not like moving anywhere else in our service area. Gasparilla Island has a single vehicle connection to the mainland, the Boca Grande Causeway, which runs about 2.5 miles across Gasparilla Sound from Placida. It includes three bridges, one of them a swing bridge. Every truck, trailer and service vehicle that reaches the island goes the same way, which is why good island moves start with a plan for the causeway.

The causeway is run by the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority and charges a toll on island-bound traffic. Commercial trucks pay by the axle and stop at the Bridge Authority's truck scale, which is open around the clock. The Bridge Authority does not take SunPass or other transponders; it accepts cash, cards, mobile pay and its own toll pass. None of that is complicated, but it all adds a few minutes, and we build it into the schedule rather than finding out at the toll booth.

On the island, the village of Boca Grande feels different from the mainland. Golf carts are a main way to get around, and a Lee County ordinance designates most village streets as golf cart paths. Streets near the historic district and Banyan Street are narrow and shaded, and residents and visitors on carts and bikes share them. We position the truck carefully, keep the crew's carry path clear for traffic, and avoid blocking driveways and cart routes. The island also has almost no fuel service, so our trucks arrive fueled from the mainland.

Housing on Gasparilla Island ranges from historic cottages in the village to gated communities. The Boca Grande Club is a gated resort community at the northern tip with condos and villas. Boca Bay is a gated community with several distinct neighborhoods. Both have their own entry procedures and management offices, so we check gate access, parking and any certificate of insurance requirements before the move. The Boca Grande Causeway: the only way on

The Boca Grande Causeway runs about 2.5 miles across Gasparilla Sound from Placida and carries CR 771 onto the island over three bridges, including a swing bridge. It is maintained by the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority, which collects a toll on island-bound traffic only. Passenger vehicles pay a flat toll, commercial trucks pay per axle, and commercial vehicles are weighed at the Bridge Authority's 24-hour truck scale.
